Visa / ILR financial documents checklist

What self-employed applicants typically need to evidence income:

  • SA302 tax calculations — filed, for the relevant years
  • Tax year overviews matching each SA302
  • Accountant's letter confirming income (factual, from filed returns)
  • Business & personal bank statements
  • Management accounts for the current year
  • Ltd directors: accounts, dividend vouchers, payslips

We prepare the financial documents only — immigration advice is regulated, and we'll refer you to a registered adviser for it.

Sorted? Then let's keep it that way.

Most clients stay after we fix the first problem: bookkeeping, Self Assessment, Ltd accounts and quarterly MTD filing in one quiet subscription. January stops being a horror month.

Questions people ask us

How far back can HMRC go?

4 years for innocent errors, 6 for carelessness, up to 20 where HMRC believes income was deliberately hidden. That's why coming forward voluntarily — before a letter arrives — almost always ends cheaper: penalties drop sharply for unprompted disclosure.

I got a "nudge letter" about foreign income or crypto. Am I in trouble?

Not yet — a nudge letter means HMRC's data (from banks and, from 2026, crypto exchanges) suggests something may be missing from your return. Ignoring it is what causes trouble. The right answer is a check of your actual position, then either a confident "nothing to declare" reply or a disclosure on the best available terms.

Do I need to file a Self Assessment at all?

Broadly: yes if you earned over £1,000 self-employed, have rental or foreign income, earn over £60,000 with Child Benefit in the household, made capital gains, or HMRC asked you to. The 60-second quiz above gives you a personal answer.

I missed the 31 January deadline. How bad is it?

£100 immediately, then £10/day after 3 months, plus 5% of the tax at 6 and 12 months — and interest. Filing now stops the meter, and a reasonable-excuse appeal can remove penalties in genuine cases. The worst strategy is waiting.

What's an SA302 and why does everyone want it?

It's HMRC's official summary of your declared income — the document banks, lenders and the Home Office use to verify what you actually earn. We file your return, then produce the SA302 and matching tax year overviews as a pack.

I'm on CIS. Why would I get a refund?

Contractors deduct 20% (or 30%) of your labour before you're paid — but that ignores your personal allowance and expenses. After the return, the overpayment comes back. We charge a fixed fee, never a percentage of your money.

I've never declared my rental income. What now?

HMRC runs the Let Property Campaign — a route to disclose voluntarily with much lower penalties than being caught first. We calculate what's owed, prepare the disclosure and negotiate time to pay if needed. The letter from HMRC is the expensive way to start this conversation.

I just moved to the UK. Do you handle foreign income?

Yes — it's a speciality. Residence tests, split-year treatment, double-tax relief and the new 4-year FIG regime for recent arrivals. If you moved in 2025/26 and owe UK tax, you must register by 5 October 2026.

Can you help with my visa application?

With the financial documents — yes: SA302s, tax year overviews, accountant's letters, management accounts. Immigration advice itself is regulated by the IAA, so we don't advise on visa rules; we work alongside your immigration adviser and stick to the numbers.

Do I need to come to an office or meet in person?

No. Everything works remotely: documents are signed electronically (a simple e-signature is fully valid in the UK), identity is verified with a 3-minute check from your phone, and calls happen when you actually want one. Clients in London and clients in Aberdeen get exactly the same service.

How do payments work?

Ongoing accounting runs as a monthly subscription collected by Direct Debit — you approve it once online and never chase invoices. One-off jobs are invoiced with payment before we file. Every price is fixed and agreed in writing first.

I already have an accountant. Is switching painful?

It's easier than people fear — and it's our job, not yours. You confirm the switch, we write to your previous accountant for "professional clearance" and your records, re-authorise ourselves with HMRC, and tell you when it's done. Nothing gets lost between accountants.

Can I write to you in my own language?

Yes — write in whatever language you think in, from Polish or Romanian to Urdu, Punjabi, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic or Bengali. We reply in plain English so every answer is easy to forward to a bank or landlord. Official documents are always in English.
